Robert J. - Of Flint, age 89, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Genesys Hospice. Funeral service will be held at 1PM, Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Chris Tenneriello officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park with military service under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a family fund for charitable donations. Visitation 12NOON-3PM and 5PM-8PM Sunday at the funeral home and 11AM Monday until the time of the service at the funeral home. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held by the Past Grand Matrons and Past Grand Patrons of Michigan at 6:30PM Sunday followed by a Memorial Service by Fellowship Lodge 490 F.&A.M. will be held 7PM Sunday at the funeral home. Robert was born on November 6, 1919, the son of Charles and Lois (Wilkinson) Whitman and was a resident of the Flint area all of his life. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He married Doloras Zajicek in 1942 and she preceded him in death in 1999. Robert was a member and past Master of Fellowship Lodge No. 490 F.&A.M. He was four times Past Patron of the Flint Chapter No. 138 O.E.S.; member and Worthy Grand Patron of Michigan Grand Chapter O.E.S.; Flint Temple Association for 22 years, where he served as President and editor of the Genesee County Masonic News. He attended Asbury Methodist Church and enjoyed building model railroads all of his life. Robert retired from Buick in 1974. Surviving are daughter, Nancy Wood-Lamb of Flint; 2 grandchildren, Denise and husband Jeff Jones of Grand Blanc, Robert and wife Karen Wood of Portage. Papa also leaves 6 great-grand-children, Brad, Bart and Jillian Jones, Heather, Mike and Corey Wood. Also surviving; sister, Pauline Brown of Columbiaville; brother, Charles and wife Barbara Whitman of Burton; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; 2 brothers, Wayne and Richard; 3 sisters, Irene, May and Hazel; 2 sons-in-law, John Wood and Ron Lamb.
