Augustine was the son of German immigrants Joseph Willmann and Margarethe Stallknecht of Rochester, New York. About 1859, for reasons unknown, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and later to Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after the outbreak of the Civil War, on 01 Aug 1861, he enlisted as a Private in the US Army at Camp Joe Holt in Jeffersonville, Indiana. On 09 Sep 1861 he enlisted in Company H, 5th Infantry Regiment Kentucky. In 1864 he reenlisted as a veteran volunteer at Blaine's Crossroads, Tennessee, and transferred into the 2nd Cavalry Regiment Kentucky. After the War he settled in Louisville where he met and married Victoria Moungie. The couple had six children: Edward, Charles, William, Joseph, August and Emma. For a good deal of his life he was employed as a carpenter but in his later years he also worked as a plumber. Augustine suffered from rheumatism, gout and chronic diarrhea all of which he claimed first afflicted him during the War. They afflicted him for the rest of his life, often to a degree that confined him to bed. August died at the home of his son Edward of atrophy of the stomach at the age of 69.

Augustine was my 3rd great grandfather.
