James Evans

SPRINGFIELD — James Gary Evans of Springfield died Jan. 2 at age 47. The family chose not to list a cause of death. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 12, 1961, in Santa Rosa, Calif., to James and Beverly Evans.

Survivors include two sisters, Tammy Evans and Linda Demers, both of Springfield.

Arrangements by Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.

Jim was my first cousin, the son of my aunt Beverly Evans. He was a paranoid schizophrenic due to drug abuse at a young age. After his mother's death from cancer in 1999, he lived with his younger sister Tammy.

The circumstances behind his death are still confused, as only Jim knows what really happened, but I am given to understand that due to financial hardship, they had to move to a trailer in Veneta and he also was not able to take the full dose of his prescribed medications for some time. As often happens with the mentally ill, he decided he no longer needed his medication at all. He became belligerent, and left his home with Tammy sometime last summer--- "run away," as Tammy put it. He apparently spent some time in an area hospital and was released. Tammy said he left home without a coat, and apparently the hospital did not furnish one when they released him. According to what we've been able to piece together, he decided to return home, but he was unable to find the trailer in Veneta, in which he and Tammy had been living when he'd left, so he went to the house in Springfield where they had lived previously. He was found dead on that doorstep on January 2, 2009--- two weeks ago today.

Jim, because of life's circumstances, I didn't really get a chance to become close to you, but I am so sorry that you lived and died as you did. You are still my cousin, no matter what, and I will always remember you.
