Six of Oziel's eight children lived to adulthood. The oldest son, Noah, served in the War of 1812. George and Oziel were New York State Assemblymen who also served in the War of 1812. John was a physician in Illinois, Wm. Ward died early in Ohio, and Nancy married into the Beecher family.

Inscription
"In memory of Oziel Smith who died Sept 18 1818 – aged 78 years – God is Love." The anchor, with the word "Hope", is the official state seal of Rhode Island, where Oziel was born. He also had a brother named Hope.
