Iona L. Spartz, 87, of Village Ridge, died there, Thursday, January 15, 2009, after a long illness.

Iona was born on January 17, 1921 in Genoa, Neb. to Edward and Emma Ericson. She married Donald Beach on June 9, 1946 in Fremont, Neb. He died in 1959. She married Paul J. Spartz in Hooper, Neb. on November 12, 1960. He died in 2001.

Iona attended Midland College in Fremont, Neb. She operated North American Van Lines in Fremont for Don until he returned home from WWII. After her marriage to Paul she later managed Mt. Calvary Cemetery for 13 years, retiring in 1989. Iona was a woman of many talents; cooking, teaching art classes at St. Joseph's School in Marion and painting with oils. Iona was a member of Alpha Omega Chapter of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority whose volunteer work benefited children, and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion.

Iona is survived by a son, Tom Spartz of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Bonnie Beach of Madison, Wisc and Katie Spartz of Marion; two grandchildren, Dustin Angerer of Marion and Katie Mason of Hiawatha; sister, Vera Mae Davis of Denison; and many nieces and nephews.

Iona was preceded in death by both husbands, Donald Beach and Paul Spartz; a son, John; and brother, Kenneth Ericson.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church by the Rev. John Gossman.
