Retired Chief Deputy AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Thursday, January 15, 2009, Mr. Jesse Carl Redd, 90, beloved husband of 70 years of Maebelle Baker Redd. Mr. Redd was a native of Fulton Co., Ga., but resided most of his life in Augusta. Mr. Redd began his career in law enforcement with the Augusta Police Department in 1945 and moved to the Richmond Co. Sheriff's Department in 1947 where he was promoted through the ranks to become Chief Deputy, until his retirement in 1972. He also served as Richmond Co. Coroner and finally, as a Bailiff for Juvenile Court and the Grand Jury until the age of 87. During his tenure with the sheriff's department he transported prisoners all over the continental U.S. His wife said he was protected by God because on one occasion he was overtaken by 3 prisoners who tied him to a tree, but did not harm him because of his respectful treatment of prisoners. Mr. Redd was a member of the Hen Pecked Club, the Hephzibah Agricultural Club, the Peace Officers Association of GA, the National Sheriff's Association and a member of Lumpkin Road Baptist Church where he was in the Ambassador Sunday School class. Family members in addition to his wife include his daughters and sons-in-law: Joyce and Chris Lamb of McBean, Barbara and Gary Witteman of Augusta, Connie and John Sheridan of Martinez; Ann and Perry Thomas of Martinez; son: George Carl "Buster" Redd of Waynesboro; grandchildren: Richard Lamb, Jesse and Tiffany Witteman, Kelly Goble, Ben Goble, the late Jodie Sheridan; great-grandchildren: Lane Witteman, Rachel Witteman; sisters: Lois Anderson and Grace Anderson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Chapel with Rev. Don Stone officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation, 1230 Johnson Ferry Rd., Suite E-40, Marietta, GA 30068-2054. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Odyssey Hospice for the care they provided. The family will receive friends Saturday, January 17, 2009 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
