Sheldon Y. Baker, 86, lifelong resident of Shelby, MI died at his home on White Street on Wednesday evening, January 27, 1960 following a long illness. He was born of Pioneer parents, James T. Baker and Francis J. (Ward) Baker who settled in Shelby from Southern Ontario, Canada in 1869. Mr. Baker was the 8th born of 10 children born to James and Francis Baker. His brothers and sisters are Emily, Marcia, Fredrick, Luther, Frank, John, Sidney, Otis, and Arminta. Mr. Baker was a teacher until his retirement after over 30 years of service in 1935. He received his education at Kalamazoo State Teachers College and Ferris Institute. During his career he taught in both Michigan and Wisconsin schools and was most successful in his chosen avocation.
He was a member of the Methodist Church in Shelby and he served as Shelby Village Clerk for six years. He married Martha Dzur on August 27, 1914 of Benona Township
who, with his children Kenneth W. of Grand Rapids, Willis E. of Muskegon, Leo S. of Tuscon, AZ, Russell J. of Royal Oak, MI.; and his daughters, Mrs. Ivah (Harold) Cole of St. Petersburg, FL, Mrs. Helen (Howard) Klintworth of Spring Lake, MI, and Mrs Beatrice (Albert) Clawson, of Muskegon; and a sister, Mrs Arminta (Norman V.) Manchester of Grand Island, N.Y.; and 16 grandchildren survive him.

Mr. Baker was married to the former Blanch Tompkins until her death in 1913. She was the mother of Willis and Kenneth and died shortly after the birth of Willis from complications during the delivery. Mr. Baker honored the request of her family that she be buried in Altona, Mecosta county Michigan so she could remain close to her mother and father.

Furneral services were held Saturday, January 30, 1960 at the Cooper Furneral Home with burial in Mr. Hope Cemetery in Shelby near his parents, James T and Francis.
