He joined up with the Union Army in the War Between the States. He was a surgeon in the 12th Missouri Cavalry and served 3 years in the War. The first of the War he served in the Missouri State Militia, but as there was no discipline at this time in that department, he later joined the regular Army.
He and his wife Louisa had seven children.
