Enlisted on 25 September 1861 in Albany, New York to serve for 3 years in the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. This was an elite regiment also referred to as "Ellsworth Avengers." Men were drawn from all over New York state for this regiment.
Specific qualifications had to be met to even be considered, such as one had to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, single and of good moral character. Mustered into Co. K as a private on 28 September 1861, then going with the regiment to Halls Hill, Virginia where they wintered.

Promoted to Corp. on 3 October 1862 and then on 5 October 1862 to Sgt. Eventually he was returned to the ranks and fought on until again promoted to Sgt on 1 March 1864.

Participated in most of the great battles of the war on the peninsula, as the 44th New York was part of the Army of the Potomac.
