Ernest was the son of Ernest W. Lutterbeck and Elizabeth Meiners. As a young man he worked for the Brinly-Hardy Co. as a woodworker. He was a US Army veteran of World War I. Ernest fought tuberculosis for two and a half years before he succumbed to the disease at the the U.S. Marine Hospital in Louisville's Portland neighborhood.
