Page 228 has the following history for the family of George Balaam: "George Balaam with his wife and seven children came to Los Angeles by ox team, arriving in the spring of 1853 after a trip of six months. His farm was between San Gabriel Mission and the old Mission. In 1858 he moved to a ranch of 160 acres, government land, five miles from Visalia, which at that time consisted of one store and one house. When the Balaam family arrived there, Mr. Balaam was happy to find in the store keeper, an old acquaintance, Sam Brennan. All supplies for Visalia had to be hauled from Stockton, the Indians were very troublesome, and the schoolhouse which the children attended at Farmersville was of logs."
