Mary was the daughter of James Edward and Lydia A. (Eaton) Bissell. She was born 1 January 1852 in Taylorsville, Iowa. She married Ira David Tinkham in Volga City, Iowa on June 16, 1867. Their first child, Ada Viola, was born there in 1868. The family moved to Kansas where daughters Lydia Elizabeth and Jessie May were born in 1870 and 1873. They returned to Iowa by 1876, when Nellie was born. William Russell and Belle Mary were born in Kansas in 1880 and 1887. Their last child, Guy Ira, was born in Seattle in 1890. The family lived in Yesler. Ira passed away in 1926 and Mrs. Bissell died June 14, 1934 in Seattle. She was 82 years, 5 months and 13 days old.

Her funeral notice appeared in the Seattle Daily Times on Friday., June 15, 1934, pg 21:
TINKHAM - Mary Ann, at 3518 E. 42nd, June 14, beloved mother of Guy and William Tinkham, Mrs. August Schroeder, Mrs. E. H. Bachtell, Mrs. Childs Klinck, Mrs. Jessie Page and Mrs. John Hendrickson. Services 1 p.m Saturday at the University Funeral Parlors.
