Antiquarian, collector, interior designer. His home, Beauport, in Gloucester, Massachusetts became a National Historic Landmark in 2003. He was director of the American Field Service in France during World War I, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor. Died of leukemia.
