Sergeant Neel was killed in the explosion of B-17 Flying Fortress #42-30024 "Caroline" at Ridgewell, England. He also has a memorial at the Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs, GA.

KENTUCKY RITES FOR SGT. NEEL

Funeral services for Sgt. Joseph L. Neel, 381st Bombardment Gp, 533rd Sq., who was killed in England June 23, 1943, will be held Tuesday at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.

Sgt. Neel was a graduate of North Fulton High School and the University of Georgia. He was a member of SPM and Chi Phi fraternities.

Sgt. Neel's brother, the late Robert W Neel, Jr Lt. , a Navy pilot, was killed in the battle of Kwajalein on January 29, 1944.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Neel, of Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas H. Morgan and Miss Elizabeth Neel, of Atlanta. Cenotaph: United States Army Air Force, Killed in Action at Ridgewell, Essex, England.

The B-17, assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces airfield at Ridgewell, England, exploded while bombs were being handled. One commissioned officer, 22 enlisted men and one English civilian, who was peddling his bicycle nearby, were killed.
Originally buried in the Brookwood Cemetery in England, the remains of the men who could not be individually identified, were repatriated to the U.S. and interred in a common grave at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in 1949.
