Robert was killed in a night ground attack by a Viet Cong squad who managed to cut through the defensive wire and converge on the maintenance area where Robert and several others were working. The VC squad threw satchel charges into and under the helicopters of the 57th Assault Helicopter Company that were being serviced. Robert was killed by enemy automatic weapons fire, as were others. Several helicopters were destroyed along with most of the wheel vehicles in the Motor Pool. The compound was eventually named Camp Pfeister in his honor. His twin brother who was assigned to the same company escorted his brothers' body back to the United States for burial.
