Eva Irene Bortner, of Hanover, entered into God's eternal care January 17, 2009, surrounded by her family.

She was a daughter of the late Paul Levi and Grace Bell (Routzahn) Nitchman.

Eva had a special place in her heart for children and enjoyed working with them through the Lincoln Intermediate Unit, where she was a teacher's assistant. She loved the pursuit of knowledge and gained it through being an avid reader. In addition, she enjoyed gardening, birds and travel. She was a graduate of Hanover (Eichelberger) High School and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church on York St.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Robert Ammon Bortner, who died in 1992 and surviving are her son, Robert Scott Bortner and wife, Denise L.; two daughters, Maxine Phyllis Glass and husband, Philip L., all of Hanover, and Christine Eva Lehman, wife of the late John R., of Columbia; her daughter-in-law, Ingrid J. Bortner of Foglesville; eight grandchildren, Michael S. Lehman, Debra J. Horowitz, Rebecca A. Bell, Thomas A. Bortner, Andrew P. Glass, Nathan E. Glass, Kristen M. Bortner and Matthew R. Bortner; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Nadine Jane Stuffle and husband, Raymond of Hanover; a brother, Leo Franklin Nitchman and his wife, Anna Mae of DE; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Earl David Bortner, who died in 1987; and an infant sister, Rosella May Nitchman.
