Eli was the son of Maxfield Whidden and Sophia P. Crews.
"South Florida Pioneers" Issue 49/50, p.10. Eley served in Capt.Francis M. DURRANCE's Co. of Mtd.Vol. during the Seminole Indian Wars. He was mustered in Aug.22,1856 at Ft.Frazier, FL and described as 6' tall, blue eyes, brown hair and light complexion. He was mustered out Dec.22,1856 at Ft.Frazier. He was mustered in the same Co. Dec.22,1856 at Ft.Brooke. The company was stationed at Ft.Drum on Apr.1857. Eley was mustered out as a bugler June 22,1857 at Ft.Brooke. The WHIDDEN clan settled in the Ft.Hartsuff area in Manatee (present day Hardee Co.) in the mid 1850's. On Oct.12,1885 Eley, age 74 years, resident of Crewsville, applied for a pension based on his Indian War service. He received $8.00 per month.
