Tire Explosion injury fatal
Edward Woody, 22, of 4626 Bancroft St., died in Mercy Hospital yesterday of head a head injury suffered in an accident in a service station at 3252 University Ave.
Police said Woody, who was employed in the auto service department at Sears' San Diego store, was working part-time as an attendant at the Dean Shell Station on University Ave. He was injured when a tire he was inflating exploded.
John Scahek, 24, of 3554 28th St. who was watching Woody work on the tire was treated at the hospital for a head injury and lacerations.
Police say both were working at the station Thursday night when Woody inflated a collapsible spare tire and it exploded, the rim hitting Woody in the head. Deputy Coroner Max Murphy said Woody is survived by his wife, Shirley.
