BUCKNER, Evelyn Jeanette May 11, 1928-August 19, 2008
Evelyn was born at home on May 11, 1928, in Yamhill to Elda and Walter Thomas.

She had a great love for Oregon and especially the northern Oregon coast, where she spent much of her youth. She had a passion for gardening, swimming, watching sports, fishing, a good low tide to dig clams, and a hot slot machine. Evelyn lived life to the fullest and never looked back. Family was always first, and friends and neighbors were often treated like family. She was a gifted cook, enjoyed trying new foods and always made more than enough so everyone had something to take home.

Evelyn always provided a helping hand where there was a need. While she was attending Astoria High School, she worked at her aunt's restaurant and later at the shipyard in Astoria during World War II. After the war ended, she moved to Portland where she worked for the phone company. While living in Northeast Portland, she met and later married a handsome young sailor named Ralph Buckner from Weaverville, N.C., on April 2, 1949. Together, they raised their two daughters, Leslie and Rhonda, in Milwaukie.

Evelyn returned to work at doctors Haug and Hoffman in Oregon City, until a transfer in Ralph's work during the 1980s took them to Atlanta. Evelyn embraced a southern life and the closeness to Ralph's family in North Carolina. Atlanta offered new friendships and opportunities to try new recipes, crafts-and for Evelyn to become an accomplished quilt maker. Ralph and Evelyn returned to Portland after Ralph's retirement.

She was a strong, active advocate in the successful passage of Oregon's "Beach Bill" in 1967, which Gov. Tom McCall signed into law, ensuring Oregon's beaches would remain public for all families to enjoy for generations to come.

Evelyn took great pride in both her daughters' accomplishments, which her generation of women opened the door to. She lived vicariously through many of their adventures. Leslie is an author and nature photographer, and Rhonda is a retired Navy pilot now flying for a major airline.

Evelyn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the fall of 2003, and passed away Aug. 19, 2008. Her strength, courage and determination was an inspiration to everyone she knew. Her spirit, enthusiasm, love, laughter and ability to light up a room will be greatly missed. She will forever be in our hearts and with us.

The family requests that donations be made in Evelyn's name to any of the following: Legacy Hopewell House Hospice, 6171 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR, 97239 (www.legacyhealth.org); Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, 910 17th St, #1190, Washington, D.C., 20006 (www.ovariancancer.org); Gilda's Club Worldwide, 322 Eighth Ave, Suite 1402, New York, NY, 10001 (www.gildasclub.org).
