"MARRIED--Steffy—Bird.—At the residence of Rev. Dr. C. H. Feltz, on the evening of Sept. 1st, 1881, Linda Bird to Richard Steffey. The bride is the only daughter of Arthur Bird. The groom is one of the many sons of John Steffy, Sr. The wedding was one of the most fashionable of the season..."

Lawrence County, IL Probate Records Book J Pg. 289-259 Record of Adoption: Excerpts from the records state the following.

Arthur and Mary Ann Bird adopt Malinda Ann Bird whose birth mother died when Malinda was a few days old and father was in the army.

Parents are listed as Elizabeth and William Irwin. Uncle is listed as David Wright and it states he is the only relative who lives in the County(Lawrence) or whose address is known. Malinda is 15 years on the 20th day of January 1880.

Additional Notes: Marriage record for Elizabeth Wright and William Irwin in McLean County, Illinois on 30 Jan 1859. I suspect the grave in this same cemetery for David S. Wright(Find A Grave Memorial# 33273311)is the Uncle mentioned in the probate books. He would be a brother to Elizabeth Wright.

Record in ancestry.com. On the 1860 census the Irwins live in McLean Co, IL where the marriage takes place as does David Wright but then David Wright is back in Lawrence County Il by the time of adoption and hence fits what is stated in the adoption records that her uncle is in Lawrence County, IL.

The reason William H. Irwin did not raise Malinda is he was not her father. The story goes that Elizabeth (Wright) Irwin was involved "with the Joseph Wampler, 1845-1867, buried Otterbein Cem., Lawrence Co., IL., while William was away at war. She died in Jan.1865, soon after Malinda's birth, and when William returned later he knew the child wasn't his. He took 2 children who did belong to him: Emma Sarah Irwin, (1859-1947), who married Dellevan Wheeler, and James, b.1864, and moved west, remarried and fathered more children. He died in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1918. Although it was not until much later that adoption took place, Malinda was raised by Arthur Bird and wife, who were childless, almost from infancy. The adoption was probably to assure that she would be their legal heir.

My great-great-grandmother Sarah (Wright) Borden was Elizabeth (Wright) Irwin's aunt, and my father's family, and latter myself, were well acquainted with Malinda's daughter Dora, and grandaughter Mary Louise."
