His father was Frederick Smith and mother Mary B. Wiltshire Smith. The family moved to McKeesport when Henry was a young boy. He lived in McKeesport the remainder of his life. He worked as a roller in the wood mill and also assisted in hauling materials for the mill. Later, he worked as a tolltaker on the Riverton Bridge.

Dec 12, 1921 - Henry Clay Smith, aged 73 years, two months and two days, one of the pioneer residents of this city, died on Saturday night at 11:55 o'clock, at the McKeesport hospital from a complication of ailments incidental to old age. Mr. Smith was born in Wheeling WV on Sept 2, 1842, the son of the late Frederick an Mary Smith, old time residents of this city, and located to McKeesport when a boy He assisted in the hauling of materials for the action of the wood mill and worked in that plant for many years as a roller. Of late years, he was employed as a tolltaker on the Riverton bridge. Although ailing for some time, his condition did not become serious until about a week ago and on last Friday he was removed to the hospital, remaining unconscious most of the time after being admitted to that institution. Mr. Smith was a member of the Balantyne ME church and his pastors., Rev. Charles R Wolf, will have charge of the funeral services this evening at ? o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. WH Momeyer, of 2004 Bailey Avenue (formerly Huey street). Interment will be private tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in Versailles Cemetery. Mr. Smith was the last member of a large family, and he is survived by two daughters and one son, Mrs. Momeyer, Mrs. JT McLane and Thomas W. Smith, all of this city, and four grandchildren.
