PIONEER WICHITA RESIDENT PASSES AT HOME TUESDAY
R.C. Israel Came to Kansas In 1876 and for Years Was in Realty Business
RETIRED 15 YEARS AGO

R. C. Israel, 69, pioneer merchant and real estate man of the city, died at his home, 743 North Waco avenue Tuesday afternoon. He had been critically ill since Saturday.

Mr. Israel has resided in this city since 1876. He was one of the early merchants operating a drug store and grocery store here in partnership with his brother, F.W. Israel. In 1880 the two Israel brothers sold their stores and engaged in the real estate business. During the Wichita boom they were the leading real estate dealers of the city, and one of the few realty firms that survived that period. The brothers operated under the firm name of Israel Bros.

R. C. Israel retired 15 years ago in order to devote his time to the management of the Riverside boat house. He started the boat house in a small way, but as canoeing on the Little River increased he enlarged the facilities on Murdock avenue to accommodate the boys and girls. At his death he had nearly 600 canoes stored in his modern boat house.

Through his early business connections Mr. Israel became acquainted with a large number of the older residents, and of late years he made the acquaintance of hundreds of the younger generation who frequented the river.

Mr. Israel is survived by his wife, Julia; four brothers, Sam Israel, 1110 Larimer avenue; W. F. Israel, 2034 Mentor avenue; Henry J. Israel, Long Beach, Cal.; George W. Israel, Los Angeles; one sister, Mrs. J. M. Hollinger, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Robert E. Israel, 1126 Coolidge avenue; and two daughters, Mrs. Dafil Carter, 743 North Waco avenue, and Miss Bessie Mae Israel, 743 North Waco avenue. He is survived by seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Gill mortuary Friday at 10 a. m. Dr. Walter Scott Priest officiating. Interment will be made in Maple Grove cemetery. The funeral has been delayed to accommodate relatives in California who have announced that they plan to attend.
