William Miller Jayne, Son of Silas Carter & Mary Benedict Jayne. He was a veteran of the Civil War in 52nd Illinois Cavalry. He attended district schools and Elgin Academy. He taught school for two years after spending four years in the California gold fields. He was among the first to respone to the call of President Lincoln for volunteers. On Nov. 9, 1869 he married Ann Elizabeth Houghtaling. They had five children: William S, Francis E, Anna Belle, Charles Milton and John A Jayne
