Ronald was born the son of Charles and Nellie (Glabe) Shafer. He married Ruth Thompson on November 8, 1936 in Chicago, IL.
He is survived by is wife of 72 years: Ruth Shafer of Fairbury, IL, his children: Kurt Shafer of Chatsworth, IL, Tod (Donna) Shafer of Channahon, IL, Karen Kamin of Schaumburg, IL, Jill (Frank) Hughes of Ann Arbor, MI, Greg Shafer of Chatsworth, IL and Scott (Statta) Shafer of Chatsworth, IL, fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Faye Shafer, Arlene Rosenboom and Elma Trinkle and one grandson: Conrad Shafer.
Mr. Shafer graduated from Chatsworth High School and the University of Illinois. He received his Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Michigan. He returned home to Chatsworth after his father passed away to run the Shafer Agency, an insurance agency in Chatsworth, where he was an insurance agent for 30 years.
Ronald was a member of the Chatsworth United Methodist Church. He had been President of the PTA and President of the School Board for Chatsworth Schools. He had been the TP & W "Man of the Year". He had served as President of the Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce. He founded the Boy Scout Troop in Chatsworth, and was Scout Master of that troop for six years, and one year was voted one of the Top Three Troop Leaders in Illinois.
Ronald was a world traveler, climbing mountains in Africa and visiting pyramids in Egypt. He loved canoeing, and became very skilled at making them. He loved camping, flying, scuba diving, golfing, bicycling, woodworking, jewelry making, and archery. He had a passion for photography and even developed his own pictures. He took up downhill skiing at age 52, becoming a decorated skier, and at age 80 took home two national titles for downhill racing in his age bracket. He was an avid motorcyclist and took many trips including one which he drove 10,000 miles in 10 days, touching all four corners of the continental United States, and one which his tires touched 48 states, also a trip to Alaska and a trip to Mexico. At age 80, he built his own racing kit car a Bradley GT. Ronald loved his family very much and his love of life will be dearly missed.
