James Beckett Gladney served in the Confederate States of America 11th Mississippi Regiment (known as the Van Dorn Reserves) in the Civil War from April 1861 until April 1865. He was a lawyer and County Judge. He served as Postmaster of Houston, Mississippi during the two terms of President Grover Cleveland. In 1885 he purchased The Houston Free South newspaper with Valentine Ruff who served as editor.
