"Miss Emma" Laid to Rest

They laid "Miss Emma" to rest here Sunday afternoon, and this the final chapter in the life of one of this community's most beloved women, was closed.

"Miss Emma," was born Emma Rebecca Lowry, daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. T J Lowry, early settlers of this county. The Rev. Mr. Lowry, her father was a Methodist circuit rider.

Her husband, J M Griffin to whom she was married 69 years ago last Saturday, was a Confederate veteran. He died about 12 years ago.

Several weeks ago, they took "Miss Emma" to the hospital. She had been in declining health for a number of years. An operation was performed in an effort to save "Miss Emma." She died Thursday night at 9:30.

Funeral services were conducted in the Houston High School auditorium—a fitting site for a climax to the life of the 90-year-old member of a pioneer Chickasaw county family. "Miss Emma" lived just "a stone's throw" from the school building, and many of the men and women who had taught school here, as well as hundreds of children who have passed through the portals of Houston High, knew and loved "Miss Emma." Many of the teachers had boarded with her.

The Rev. W C McCay, pastor of the Firs t Methodist Church, officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. D D Satterwhite, pastor of the Baptist church. Houston Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were: T J Lowry, Eugene Hall, E S Medlin, H D Hembree, Lee Horn, Bertram Moore, Manie Hall, R F Brand, Curtis Davis and Doss Lowry.

Born near Houston, "Miss Emma", until her recent illness, had been active and interested in all matters pertaining to her church, the school, and the community. She was a Methodist.

She leaves five daughters, Mrs. Charlie Harrington of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. Everett Kendall of Houston, Tex.; Mrs. Carl Tinch of McAlester, Okla.; Mrs. Billy Rhea of Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. Jake Beasley of Hughes, Ark.; a son, Robert Griffin of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Joe C Davis of Jackson, Miss.; fourteen grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
