Obituary from the Augusta, Wisconsin newspaper dated 1 May 1914 as an exchange item from the "Fairchild Observer":
Mrs. Devolson Pettis died quite suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Schufer, Friday forenoon, April 17th. Although 91 years old Mrs. Pettis had been in good health for one so old up to a few moments before her death. Funeral services were held from the M. E. church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Prucia officiating. Interment was made in the village cemetery.
Maria Curtis was born at Windom, Green Co., N. Y., April 4, 1823; was married to Joseph Reed Oct. 25, 1846. To this union was born four children, Ira G. Reed, of Cleveland; Mrs. Henrietta Payson, of Brewster, Kan., and Clara Roinson and Orrin A. now deceased. They moved to Dodge county in 1853 and in 1854 to Columbia county. This husband died Nov. 16, 1856.
She was married to Devolson Pettis Dec. 31, 1859. To this union were born Mrs. Julia Blain of Menomonie; Mrs. Issa Schufer of Cleveland; Ellen C. and Laura J. both deceased. They moved to the town of Fairchild in 1849 and resided there until about 12 years ago when the infirmities of old age compelled them to leave the farm and move to the village of Fairchild where they resided until three years ago when they removed to their daughter's home in Cleveland where she resided until her death April 17, at the age of 91 years and 12 days. The deceased was baptized into the Baptist church at the age of 16 and ever lived a Christian life.
