George Eveleth was the son of Frederick and Hester (Hoffner) Eveleth. While still a child, he migrated with his family to Cynthiana, Kentucky. On July 13, 1861, he enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 2nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry at Camp Boone, Tennessee, and fought for the Confederacy. He was killed at the Battle of Fort Donelson on February 15, 1862 (just a day before the fort surrendered to General Grant).
