George W. Perfield, Jr., 85, of Central Square, died Monday, January 26, 2009 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. He was born in Orwell, NY on May 20, 1923, the only son of George Sr. and Thressa Perfield. During the Depression, he was employed building roadways at Pine Camp (Ft. Drum). A WWII Veteran of General George Patton's Third Army, he attained the rank of Master Sergeant and participated in operations across France, Belgium and Germany. He was a member of the Army Reserves for 25 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer and was a member of Fuller-Taylor American Legion Post #915, Central Square. George retired in 1978 as a supervisor at Niagara-Mohawk Power Corp. where he had worked for 31 years, and was Sexton of Hillside Cemetery, Central Square for over 40 years. He was a member of IBEW Local #79 in Syracuse and a 60 year member of Central Square Lodge #622 F&AM. He enjoyed working and in addition to electrical, mechanical and welding work, he owned and operated his own excavation company. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, the former Marjorie Morey; two sons, David (Linda) of Lane, Oklahoma and James (Nancy) of Cato; five grandchildren, Jill (Brian) Anelli of Liverpool, Dr. James Perfield of Columbia, MO, David Perfield of New Hampton, NH, Anne (Dr. Jeffrey) McDonough of Cambridge, MA and Laura Perfield of Auburn; two great grandchildren, Madeleine McDonough and Brandon Anelli; three sisters, Delores (George) Dupre, Beverly Ladd and Arline Corrice, all of Central Square; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Jean in 1937. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 30, 2009 at the WATSON FUNERAL HOME, INC., 631 So. Main St., Central Square, Rev. Sandra Jarvis, officiating, with spring burial in Hillside Cemetery, Central Square. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to SOVAC Ambulance, PO Box 209, Central Square, NY 13036.
