George F. Strickling, was born in Monroe County Ohio . His father worked on steamboats on the Ohio River before moving to Ashland Ohio when George was 14. The entire family was musically inclined.His mother was a church organist. George's father bought a clarinet for $3 and it was George's first instrument.He became accomplished at the clarinet and played in silent movie theatres. After graduating high school he worked as a stenographer at the local railroad station . He enlisted in the military and was the leader of the 329th U.S. Infantry Regimental Band,during WW1 and was one of the the youngest band leaders in history.
Upon returning from military duty he attended university
before residing in Cleveland Ohio. In 1930 Mr Strickling founded the Cleveland Acappella Choir and the Heights Choir became world famous. Two years later the choir performed on NBC, made appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra and singer Kate Smith.In 1953 the choir conducted an international tour visiting numerous countries including England, Scotland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden.They performed before a crowd of 60,000 people.He was an integral part of the Clevand music scene for over 50 years.
He was the recipient of numerous accolades including Cleveland Ohio Citizen of the year and was awarded the Valley Forge Award presented by the Freedom Foundation.
He was the Music Director at Case University in Cleveland. Mr Strickling was a published composer of choral and band arrangements and his arrangements are sung by choirs the world over. He authored the book "Music The Beautiful".
