Hazel Yvonne Halterman was born on September 1, 1931 in Rockingham County, Virginia to Acey Herbert Halterman and Inez Roberta Deane Halterman. She had two sisters and one brother: Wilda May, Gloria Deane (who died tragically at the young age of 16 months) and Wendell Herbert.
In 1948, she married Dowl David Harris. They had three daughters, Gloria Darlene (1949), Patricia Dale (1951) and Joy Carol (1952). In 1961, Hazel and Dowl were divorced.
Hazel worked at Thalhimer’s department store in Richmond, Virginia, first doing seamstress work, and later colorizing professional sepia portraits. Later, she worked at Bank of Virginia, where she met Clyde Herman Kritzer, whom she married in 1963. Herman was a wonderful step-father to her children. Sadly, this union dissolved in 1965.
In 1966, Hazel married Emory Lee Hughes, Jr. and remained married to him until her death in 1996. At the time of her death, she was survived by her three daughters (Darlene Harris Treadway, Dale Harris Crabtree and Joy Harris Shepherd) and four grand-children: Karen Treadway Hege, Michael Treadway, Ryan Crabtree and Sarah Shepherd.
