Thomas "Tom" Christopher Carter was the son of William Howard Carter and Rebecca Smith (Beesley) Carter. Thomas married (1) Jessie Ann Hutchinson on January 1, 1878 in Franklin County, Indiana and (2) Selina Peek on February 5, 1882 in Clinton County, Indiana.

Jessie died on January 7, 1879 of tuberculosis (ill 3 months). Thomas and Jessie were living in Thorntown, Boone County, Indiana after they married when Jessie became ill. Tom took Jessie back to her parent's home in Whitewater Township, Franklin County, Indiana to die.

Tom and Selina had 9 children-Anna "Annie" Lillian Carter, Lessie (Carter) Strong, Gernie Elizabeth (Carter) Barnett, Daisy Leone (Carter) Layton, Leonard Otto Carter, Otha Opal (Carter) Kelsey Jacobs, Alfred Audra Carter, Maymie (Carter) Wolf and Charles "Charlie" Christopher Carter.
