Elgin ran a general store in Chapel Hill from the time of his marriage until he went to Virginia in 1885. He would later return to Chapel Hill and the general store.
Elgin and family were active members in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill where Elgin served as an elder.
After the death of his wife, he would move to Lynchburg, Virginia where he joined his son Joseph Marble in business. He returned to Chapel Hill after 1896.
