He was born in Altoona, son of the late Edward and Jennie (Rudy) Helsel.
Surviving are a son, David C. Helsel of Altoona; and two sisters: Avis Shaw and Lois Miller, both of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Cullen) Helsel.
Edward was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart. He retired from the U.S. Army where he worked at Army Depot, New Cumberland.
Friends will be received from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Axe and Santella Family Chapel, Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 6 p.m., followed by military honors.
