After graduating from Miss Lucy Hawkins School in War-renton, Mrs. Adams attended and graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She received numerous honors at Meredith and was elected and served as president of the Senior Class of 1928. At the time of her death, she was believed to be the oldest Meredith alunna.
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, James Ervin Adams of Hamlet, North Carolina, whom she married in November of 1931, and by her son, Colonel James E. Adams, Jr., who died in May 2008. Survivors include her son, Turner Vann Allen Adams and wife, Nancy, and daughter, Judith Adams Barlow, all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and daughter-in-law, Martha Butler Adams of Niceville, Florida; six grandchildren, James Ervin Adams III and wife, Priscilla, of Florence, South Carolina; Janet Adams Lecrantz and husband, Larry, of Martinez, Georgia; Judge Kenneth Alan Barlow, Jr. of Orlando, Florida; Katherine Barlow Cumming and husband, Trey, of Rome, Georgia; Elizabeth Adams Deaton and husband, Scott, of Tucker, Georgia; and William Allen Adams and wife, Lindsey, of Davidson, North Carolina; and seven great-grandchildren.
During her years in Warrenton, Mildred was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Warrenton Bridge Club, Warrenton Book Club and many other community service organizations. As the oldest member of the Warrenton Baptist Church at the time of her death, Mildred served as one of the first female members of its Board of Deacons.
Mildred worked for the Warren County Department of Social Services for 25 years and had a love for all citizens of Warrenton and Warren County. She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and the stories she told of her unusual experiences.
Services celebrating her life were held at the Warrenton Baptist Church on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Allen Kelley and Dr. Robert E. Seymour officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Warrenton Baptist Church or Preservation Warrenton, P.O. Box 944, Warrenton, North Carolina 27589. Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton served the family.
