"All of Paul's life he'd wanted to go elk hunting and the last few years of his life he and Lonnie had been trying to get a permit to go but was never lucky enough to have their names drawn. Finally in 1987 they both were selected for a hunt but had drawn different days. Lonnie contacted the people over the hunt and explained the situation to them. As Paul's health had been getting steadily worse, Lonnie would need to be with him on the same hunt and location. It was finally all arranged when other hunters were gracious enough to trade with Paul and Lonnie so they'd be hunting together. On the day of the hunt the guide dropped Paul off and went up the trail a few hundred yards and dropped Lonnie off. Lonnie told later that after a half hour or so he heard a shot. Waiting a few minutes and hearing nothing else, he made his way to the 'stand' where his dad, Paul, had been left that morning. There sat Paul with a big elk he'd killed a few yards from him. They were both tickled beyond imagination. Paul asked Lonnie if he'd help him to get to the elk. He told Lonnie that he just wanted to touch it. Lonnie helped his dad up and helped him over to where the elk lay. Lonnie said Paul set down there beside the elk and ran his hands over the elk's head and was smiling from ear to ear. Paul died from a massive heart attack there beside his elk. Lonnie told everyone later that he got to see his dad realize one of his life-long dreams, of them going elk hunting together and finally getting to kill an elk. Not many people get to die doing something that fulfills their heart's desire... Paul did." -- Source Robert Wayne McCullough's wife, Chris
