OBITUARY

Rebecca Wheeler-Manuel was born at Lexington, Ky., Nov. 13, 1814, and died at Soldier, Kan., Jan. 30, 1906 aged 91 years 2 months and 17 days.
She was married to Philip Manuel in May, 1837 and to this union were born nine children, five of which preceded her to the great beyond.
In March 1855 she moved to Kansas and settled near Wathena. In 1868 moved to Wailula and in 1877 came to Jackson county and for the last 21 years had made her home in Soldier. It is seldom that anyone reaches the advanced age that Grandmother Manuel did, she was unusually active and hearty and with the exception of the past two winters had always kept house for herself. She was a regular and devout attendant at the Methodist church, which was the church of her choice, in which she held membership for over 70 years. Her faith in the Lord was always strong and many times she had expressed herself as "only waiting for the summons" which came to her last Tuesday after only a few hours illness. She had been making her home this winter with her daughter, Mrs. J. T. Holston. She leaves four children, John Manuel of Holton, Kan., James Manuel of Billings, Okla., Thos. Manuel and Mrs. J.T. Holston of Soldier, Kan., also 27 grand children, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-greatchild, a total of 53 descendants.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Webb at the M.E. church in Soldier at 10 o'clock on Thursday, and the burial was made at the Bucks Grove cemetery, by the side of her husband who preceded her to the grave 29 years. A short service was also held in the Bucks Grove Church.
