Obituaries: Tulare-Visalia Area (CA) - February 24, 2006
Deceased Name: Joel Delaney Churchill
Joel Delaney Churchill was born in Hanford, California, September 9, 1973. He went to be with the Lord on February 21, 2006, with his family at his side.

Although Joel grew up in Visalia, California, some of his fondest memories were of his living in Newmarket, England, and Gardendale, Texas, before settling in Visalia, with his mom, dad and little brother, Jesse. Joel received the Lord as his Lord and Savior at age eight, in the swimming pool with his grandfather, Clyde Churchill. Joel was voted Most Valuable Player as a swimmer at age 12.

Joel began to work at 15 years of age. His favorite job was as a Group Supervisor at Juvenile Hall. His biggest passions were music, camping in the mountains, and reading. Joel's dream to become a rock star began to materialize when he moved to Costa Mesa in December of 1997. It was there Joel met his "honey girl" Jami Maellene Sisson. They fell madly in love with each other and married in September of 1999.

Jami and Joel enjoyed life with each other traveling to the mountains, spending time with family and friends and loving each with the love of Christ. Joel joined the band Ten Mile Tongue as the bass player. It was with them when he experienced some of the best times of his musical life. Joel was able to travel with his band playing at The Whiskey, even traveling to Cyprus, Greece, and other places he had dreamed of as a teenager.

At the peak of Joel's career he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, thus changing the direction of his journey in this life. His six-year battle included multiple surgeries, radiation, and three years of chemo-therapy. During these days, Joel enjoyed spending time with his dad, listening to his dad playing blues on the guitar. While two more tumors began to grow, Joel shared with his mother, "I would rather have brain cancer and the relationship I have with the Lord, than to be a famous rock star and lose my soul."

Even though Joel's illness was hard on his body, his human spirit was being filled day by day with the love and person of Christ. This brought everyone around Joel closer to the Lord. Joel was in constant fellowship with the One he loved and gave his life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Jerri Machado. and great-grandmother, Vivian Branch.

He is survived by his wife, Jami Churchill of Tulare; parents, Bruce and Rose Churchill of Visalia; grandparents, Clyde and Elouise Churchill of Visalia; grandfather, Paul Allen of Exeter; step-grandfather, Frank Machado of Hanford; brother, Jesse and wife, Dana Churchill of Visalia; nephews, Matthew and Jaden Churchill; niece, Kaiah Vangoethem; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today and 2-5 p.m. Saturday at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel, Visalia. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the International Agri-Center, 4450 South Laspina St., Tulare. Burial will be private.
