KNOXVILLE - Rodney Dale "Hot Rod" Godsil, 68, of Knoxville, Ill., died at 8:42 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill., after fighting a long, courageous battle against cancer.

He was born June 4, 1940, in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Raymond "Swanee" and Elizabeth Catherine Essex Godsil. He married Patricia Ann Dawdy on Oct. 3, 1966, in Knoxville, Ill. She survives in Galesburg, Ill.

Also surviving are two daughters, Shawna Ann (Javier) Garcia of Sycamore, Ill., and Lisa Noel (R.D.) Zimmerman of Knoxville, Ill.; three granddaughters, Erika Diaz, Olivia Diaz, and Ana Garcia; four sisters, Rosalie (Joe) Burgess of Knoxville, Ill., Rebecca (David) Ruetz of Sycamore, Ill., Rhonda (Steve) Sanford-Murmann of Monmouth, Ill., and Renee (Mark) Tadie of Alexis, Ill.; four brothers, Dr. Raymond (Judy) Godsil Jr. of Auburn, Ala., Randolph (Barbara) Godsil of Oak Run, Dahinda, Ill., Richard (Marcia) Godsil of Gardner, Kan., and Robin (Sharon) Godsil of Monmouth, Ill.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was reared and educated in Knoxville, graduating from Knoxville High School in 1958.

He began work at the Burlington Northern Railroad as an electrician and in the mid-'60s started his career as a car salesman, working for his father at "Swanee's Good and Bad Used Cars." Then he worked at Feslers, had his own car lot at Grand and Main, "Rod's Auto Center," Louis Lakis Ford, Lindsay Cadillac-Pontiac, and lastly working as a used-car manager at Yemm Chevrolet, all in Galesburg, Ill.

He was a member of the Glass Favorite Corvette Club and the Knoxville High School Half a Hundred Club. He enjoyed driving his Corvette and visiting with his many friends and family.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Ill. Kevin Godsil will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home and Crematory in Knoxville, Ill. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery in Knoxville, Ill.

Memorials can be made to the education fund for his grandchildren, c/o Tompkins State Bank in Galesburg, Ill.
