OBITUARY Iron River Reporter May 14 1962 “Rites Today For First Road Victim”
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 at the First United Presbyterian Church for Roy Moger, 71, of Beechwood, Iron county’s first traffic fatality of the year.
The Rev. Gordon H. Reif will officiate. Interment will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.
The remains will be moved from the Johns-Fell Chapel to the church today at 12:30 to lie in state until the time of services.
A lifelong resident of this area, Mr. Moger was pronounced dead on arrival at Stambaugh General Hospital Thursday morning, after he was thrown from his pick-up truck when he lost control of the vehicle while attempting to pass a semi-truck hauling a bulldozer on US-2 near the Crestwood Motel.
BLAME SEIZURE Sheriff’s officers said apparently Moger, who was known as a careful driver, suffered a seizure of some nature as he was driving. He suffered from diabetes, the officers said.
The sheriff said Moger swung out to pass the west bound 1960 International semi driven by Clinton Davis of Route two, when he lost control of his pick-up, which was carrying a load of sawdust. The vehicle struck the trailer and spun around, throwing Moger from the truck, which overturned several times and careened off the highway.
The tragedy occurred four miles west of Iron River Thursday morning shortly after 10. The sheriff’s office was notified by a passing motorist.
Sheriff’s officers said his speed was not a factor in the crash, since the semi, owned by the Davis Brothers, was traveling at only 40 miles per hour on a downgrade.
FORMER BUCK MINER Mr. Moger was born Dec. 18, 1890 at Watersmeet and had resided at Beechwood for the past 12 years. He had been employed at the Buck mine in Caspian for the past 20 years, until his retirement three years ago.
He was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church, was vice president of the Men’s Council, a member of the Board of Deacons and was a regular church usher. He was also a member of the Ottawa Farm Bureau.
Surviving are his widow, Esther; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marcial) Hawk of Hollywood, Ill.; a son Ronald Moger of Lyons, Ill.; two stepsons, Charles Froblom of Iron River and Alden Froblom with the armed forces in Germany; and two foster daughters, Eleanor and Patricia, at home.
[There are also] six sisters, Mrs. Geoffrey Girard, Mrs. McKinley Duff, Mrs. Ourson Pelkey, and Mrs. Oscar Shellgren of Gaastra, Mrs. Walter Looney of Munising and Mrs. Arthur Dennis of Manitowoc, Wis.; and one brother, Clayton of Gaastra. Ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.
One son, Ellsworth, preceded him in death in 1947.
