Dr. Jacob Spohn, for forty years a practicing physician of Rochester, died at 10:15 at his home in St. Louis. Dr. Spohn had been ill for many weeks with cancer. The body was returned to Rochester by train for burial in the Odd Fellows cemetry on April 21, 1906.
Dr. Spohn was born in Hupstaten, Hassen, Hamburg, Germany and came to this country with his parents when he was 2 yrs of age. Dr. Spohn lived in St. Joseph Co. in IN and in Warsaw,IN.
In 1861 he began the study of medicine in Warsaw and attended medical school in Michigan.
While practicing medicine in 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Miller, daughter of Judge Hugh Miller. Mary passed away five years later and in 1878 he wed Ella J. Rex who survives him.
While a citizen of Rochester he was a member of the public school board and was instrumental in haveing the Presbyterian church rebuilt here, and was an active church worker. He was a very successful physician and being a careful business man accumulated quite an estate. He was a polished man of affairs and an extensive reader and thinker and stood high as physician and citizen.
