Born 3rd of 7, to Emil and Louisa (Ochsenschlager) Killian. The family was well established in Aurora, IL, and both the Killian's and the Ochsenschlagers were well known in the area. Herman spent his adult life working in the Western Wheeled Scraper Company (aka Austin Western) in Aurora. He was foreman and then later Superintendent of Production.

In 1897, he married Mary Christina McKay. They never had any children, but in 1917 they adopted a newborn child, Claudie Nichols. They renamed him John Ross Killian (my grandfather). Herman and Mary were lifelong residents of Aurora and members of the Trinity Episcopal Church. The house they spent their lives in stood until about 2002 when it was torn down. Herman died in 1941 from Cancer of the face, neck and throat.
