Shortly after marrying Kate, they moved to the state of MI, but in 1881 moved back to Willsboro, NY. Later, they moved to Sacramento, CA.
Herman left his wife and kids probably around 1901 or 1902. The story the kids were told was that he was going to Alaska to mine for gold, but they never saw him again. Many years later, a relative found him buried in the Old Sacramento City Cemetery. He had been moved from Boulder, CO where he died in 1905. Someone contacted Katie to let her know where he was in CO, and she had his body moved to the Sacramento City Cemetery, but she never told the kids. It is not known how he ended up in CO.
