DEATHS
MRS. ELIZABETH PETTIT-
Mrs. Elizabeth Leatherberry Pettit, sister of Mrs. D. J. Firstenberger of this city, died last Friday morning at 5 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Warren Fletcher in DuBois. Had she lived until the 27th of this month, she would have been eighty-three years of age. Mrs. Pettit and her husband came to Kansas from her native home, Marion, Ohio with their three children, in 1869, settling near Old Cincinnati. Mr. Pettit was employed as an engineer in the old mill, owned by his uncle, John Fries. After the town of DuBois was located they moved there. Mr. Pettit died about thirty years ago and since that time Mrs. Pettit has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Fletcher, part of the time in Atchison, a few months in this city, but for a much longer time in DuBois. She leaves also another daughter, Mrs. Lulu Poland of Abilene, Kansas who was present during her mother's last illness. Mrs. Pettit was stricken with paralysis three years ago and had since been an invalid. Another stroke followed a few days preceding her death.

Mrs. Firstenberger attended her sister's funeral, held on Sunday afternoon at the United Brethren church where she held her membership.

Ann Elizabeth Leatherberry was born at Marion, O., January 27, 1834, and died at DuBois, Neb., January 19, 1917, aged 82 years, 11 months and 22 days. She was married to Levi W. Pettit at Marion, O., February 12, 1857, who preceded her to her grave several years. To this union four children were born, three being born in Ohio and one more after they had moved to Indiana. Two of the daughters still survive her, Mrs. A. W. Fletcher, of DuBois, Neb., and Mrs. Lulu M. Poland of Abilene, Kansas. They moved to Nebraska in 1869, locating at Old-Cincinnati, later moving to DuBois where they have resided almost continuously ever since.

She was a member of the U. B. church, having professed Christ early in life. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Dan Firstenberger, of Seneca, Kan., and the two daughters, besides a large number of friends.

Mrs. Pettit has been a long sufferer and all that kind and loving hands could do for her was done, and it is indeed a loss to the community to lose one of its oldest settlers.

The funeral was held in the U. b. church Sunday and interment was made in the DuBois cemetery beside her husband.- DuBois Press

Mrs. Pettit and her family were quite well known to the people in Seneca years ago, two brothers living in this county at one time, and her parents made their home in Seneca the last days of their lives. Mrs. D. J. Firstenberger is the youngest and sole survivor of the Leatherberry family.
