Theodorus ("Dorus") van Gogh studied theology and became in 1849 a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in Zundert (Noord-Brabrant), where the protestants were a small minority. His father was a Reverend as well, in the same region. In 1851 he married Anna Carbentus (1819-1907), the daughter of a bookseller. They had seven children. In 1871 he was appointed in Helvoirt, in 1875 in Etten, in 1882 in Nuenen (all of these villages in the same region). In 1885 he suddenly died. Among his parishioners he was nicknamed "the handsome Reverend", but he was not a very talented preacher.
