Calvin Arnold-Valdez

RED MESA — Funeral services for Calvin Joseph Arnold-Valdez, 73, will be 10 a.m., Feb. 5, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup. The Rev. Blane Grein, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup. A rosary will be recited at Rollie Mortuary.

Arnold-Valdez died Feb. 1, 2009, in Chinle. He was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Albuquerque, into the Red House People Clan for the Mexican People Clan.

Arnold-Valdez attended school in Gallup. He worked with the Navajo Tribe. Some of his many jobs included working as a Miner, an Electrician in California and thirteen years for the Navajo Tribe. He retired from Chinle Unified School Systems in 1998.

Arnold-Valdez He served in the Navy for about four years and was discharged in 1955. Boy!! He sure was a good-looking soldier! He had beautiful black Curly hair and hazel eyes which some of grandchildren inherited but only one granddaughter has his hazel eyes.

Arnold-Valdez Calvin was cuadlingual which meant he could speak Spanish, English, Navajo and Zuni. Through our genealogy research and Family Tree DNA, he found out he was of Irish descend.

Arnold-Valdez Calvin, In his early years, loved to go hunting and fishing. He especially loved to go fishing with his Uncle Pancho. They would have the best time.

Arnold-Valdez loved to cook, He was famous for his outstanding Salsa with a secret recipe that he wouldn't share with anyone because he enjoyed seeing the joy it brought to those he shared it with.

Arnold-Valdez, He loved to travel to Washington State to visit family and gather Flat Cedar from different parts of the Northern states. He would mix each kind of Cedar for Tradition Native Blessings and for his baby daughter (Andy)

Arnold-Valdez, Also he loved watching T.V. Especially Football. His team, the Pittsburg Steelers won the Super Bowl this year.

Arnold-Valdez But best of all he loved visiting with his grandchildren. They were the joy of his life!!!
His family meant so much to him and he was so proud of their accomplishments.

Calvin had a kidney transplant 2001. His daughter Ronnie Quintana gave him one of her Kidneys. What a true blessing. God is so good to us.

A year in November he was diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. He had the best Doctors at the University Hospital in Albuquerque. He always received the best care. But best of all, he was always surround and supported by his family each time he was admitted.

Calvin you will truly be missed. Our hearts will always be with you. We love you husband, dad, grandfather,Uncle, brother and friend.


Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Arnold-Valdez; sons, Calvin A. Arnold of Red Mesa, Marcus Arnold of Mesa, Robert I. Arnold of Red Mesa; daughters, Teri Talker of Fort Defiance, Ronnie Quintana of Ganado, Bert Arnold of Albuquerque, Andy Valdez of Gallup; brother, Bill Harring of Cotton, Calif.; sister, Lindell Chavez of Albuquerque; 25 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Arnold-Valdez was preceded in death by his parents, Tony S. Valdez, Mary D. Arnold; brother, Rick S. Valdez; one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Delvin Hill, Michael Arnold, Beau Becenti, Roger Pablo Jr., LeManuel Jim, Ray Macias Jr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup, following services.
