Mary Emily was called Minnie. She was born near High Point, North Carolina. She was the 2nd child of Martin Louis Ebert and Amanda Paulina Swaim. When she was four years old this family moved to Oregon, Holt, Missouri. She had 3 brothers, Joseph Richmond, William Franklin and Emet Lee Ebert. The first three children were born in North Carolina and delivered by their grandmother, Keziah Emily Idol Swaim, a midwife. When Minnie was five years old the brother, Emet, was born and her mother died. Her father later remarried Ruth Ann Belville. Their first child died at birth. Minnie had a half brother and eight half sisters.

When Minnie was 18 years old she went to live with her aunt and uncle in White Cloud, Kansas and it was there that she met Elbert Sidney Lewis. They were married 23 Dec 1886 in Brown County, Kansas and they had a boy and four girls.

Minnie was about 5 feet tall, had black hair, usually worn in a bun, and dark blue eyes. She worked very hard all of her life as a farmer's wife.
