William was living in Fyffe, when he was drafted 28 September 1967 into the US Army.
When William arrived in Vietnam 30 August 1968, he was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry, 4the Infantry Division, USARV. The battalion was participating in Operation Wayne Grey with B Company operating south of Hill 497 and 33 kilometers north of the Plei Djereny Airfield, when the company encountered hostile forces. William died as a result of a gunshot wound to the body from hostile sniper fire while leading men to better fighting positions against hostile forces in the area.
Survived by his parents, Willie D and Idell McDaniel Barksdale of Route #1, Fyffe, Alabama.
Awarded the Silver Star.
