Early Settler of Hills Will Be Buried Today

Hugh Pryor Estes, who died at his home in this city Tuesday, May 16, of paralysis, was born near Agnes (Agnos), Ark., May 31, 1854, and had he lived until the thirty-first of this month would have been sixty-eight years of age. He was ill only one week.

When a young man of twenty-three ho came to the Hills, going first to Deadwood. Four years later he returned to Arkansas, where at Salem, on January 1, 1881, he married Miss Emma J. Sutherland, who survives him. In May, 1881, they went to Lead, and soon after settled near Nemo, and the town of Estes was named after him. In 1906 the family moved to Smithville, and they continued to go back and forth between Estes and what is now the vicinity of Wall. In October, 1920, they came to Rapid City, purchased a home in North Rapid, and have made that their home.

Six children were born to this worthy couple, all of whom are living and are here to attend the funeral. They are, Jesse Estes, of Buckhorn, Wyo.; James, of Nemo; Mrs. Harry Sneddon, of Edgemont; Hugh Estes, of Wall; Mrs. Ivan Porter, Owanka; Miss Edith Estes, of this city, and also a small boy whom they took to raise, Chafes Armon Hill. He leaves twelve grandchildren, and also leaves four brothers Cal, James and Dave, of Agnes (Agnos), Ark., and Marle, of Stewart (Stuart), Oklahoma. Deceased was a man of good habits and principles and made friends of all who met him. As a husband and father he was affectionate and kind, and his loss Is deeply felt. His religious preference was the Christian church.

Funeral services will be held at the home in North Rapid this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. A. Godsave. The Elks will have charge at the grave.
