Captain Jacob Breon
Died at 5:45 o'clock yesterday evening
of apophxy, after a long illness, at his
home, 425 Third avenue. Captain
Breon was born in Spring Mills, Centre
county, May 30 1829, and had been a
resident of this city since 1882. He was
a carpenter by trade. At the outbreak
of the rebellion Captain Breon enlisted
as a private in company F, One Hundred
and Forty-eighth Pennsylvania Infantry,
of which ex-Governor James A. Beaver
was colonel. With his regiment
he participated in more than twenty
engagements, and was successively
promoted second and first lieutenant and
captain, being commissioned a captain
after the battle of Gettysburg for
gallantry displayed. Shortly after the
battle of Gettysburg he was taken
prisoner and was contained for nine months
in the prison pens of Andersonville,
Charleston, and Libby. While in the
last named place, he was exchanged and
rejoined to his regiment. Captain Breon
was married November 29, 1849 to
Mary Burell, who with these children
survive: Mrs. Simon Small, Mrs. H.
C. Schmitt, William H. and George E.,
all of Altoona. He was a member of
the Union Veteran Legion and, until
recently, was a member of Post 62, G.
A. R. He was a member of the Fifth
Avenue Methodist Church, being one of
the organizers of the congregation. The
funeral services will be conducted at
the house tomorrow afternoon at 2:30
o'clock by Rev. George Leidy.
Interment will be made in Fairview
cemetery.
